Matthew 7:12-14

12 "Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.

13 "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many.

14 How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.
--------------

Note that Christ identifies BOTH a narrow gate AND a constricted road. The gate is salvation by grace, through faith. The road is what we do AFTER we enter the gate. As St. Jerome wrote in the 4th century: "Many begin well, but there are few who persevere."

In the gospels, Jesus shows us how to walk the constricted road. We are to remain in Him, and he clearly tells us that remaining in Him means obeying His commands.
