2 Pt 3:12-15a, 17-18

Beloved: Wait for and hasten the coming of the day of God,because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flamesand the elements melted by fire.

But according to his promisewe await new heavens and a new earthin which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these things,be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.

And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation. Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned,be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipledand to fall from your own stability. But grow in graceand in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

This is the today's first reading.

We are encouraged to "be eager to be found without spot or blemish" before Christ. To me, this means that we are definitely expected to seek out spiritual perfection in our life. We may never get to it, but we also aren't called to just stay "where we are."

I don't think the fact that we can't accomplish perfection on our own is an excuse for not pursuing it. We are called to come ever closer to God (Father, Son and Spirit) over our lives. The more we seek this from deep within, the more God will work on our blemishes and spots.
