3/10/11 - Obey Him, Love Him, Walk In His Ways

Deuteronomy 30:10-16

Moses said to the people:
“Today I have set before you
life and prosperity, death and doom.
If you obey the commandments of the LORD, your God,
which I enjoin on you today,
loving him, and walking in his ways,
and keeping his commandments, statutes and decrees,
you will live and grow numerous,
and the LORD, your God,
will bless you in the land you are entering to occupy.
If, however, you turn away your hearts and will not listen,
but are led astray and adore and serve other gods,
I tell you now that you will certainly perish;
you will not have a long life
on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and occupy.

I love the way the Church begins our walk through Lent.  It all starts with understanding how far we have removed ourselves from God, and the way God gives us to come back to Him.

This is an old testement reading, and some of the statutes and decrees no longer apply.  However, the basic path to salvation remains what it has always has been, throughout time:  obey the commandments of the Lord, love him, and walk in His ways.  When we accept Christ as our savior, we put our hand in His, and He guides us down the path.

If you say you "believe in" Jesus, and you don't believe this, then you're not believing in the real thing.  Because Jesus was clear -- we need to remain in Him to have eternal life, and we remain in Him by obeying His commandments.

  1. Yes, the tough thing is doing what God asks of us, what Jesus told us to do, and not what we want. One reason I try to get confirmation from several sources before embarking on a project is to discern what God's will is and make sure I'm not just doing my own.
