A collection of spiritual messages written for the Christ Renews His Parish email list for St. Joseph's Parish in Cottleville, Missouri. I moved away from St. Joseph's in the summer of 2010, but the email list lives on!

3/16/11 - Jonah, the Queen of the South, and Us
Luke 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
--------
The Ninevites believed Jonah. The Queen of the South came to see the wisdom of Solomon. The Jews had the best sign they could possibly have, right in front of them, and didn't believe.
Here's a good meditation to make during lent.
How many times is that me? How many times do I not fully believe Christ, even though He is right in front of me? How many times do I disobey Him, even though He is right here, inside of me? How many times do I refuse to follow Him, even though He is right in front of me, offering to lead me?
